DCA does not solve "what to buy"; it solves "how to admit you cannot judge when to buy". By spreading purchases over time it deletes the age-old question of "when to enter" from your to-do list — but the price of deleting timing is taking on two harder tasks: discipline and taking profits. 1. The Essence of DCA
1.1 Replacing Timing With Time Diversification
DCA (Dollar-Cost Averaging) = a fixed date, a fixed amount, buying the same asset regardless of price. It works for exactly one reason: the same sum of money buys more shares when prices are low and fewer when prices are high — so the long-run average cost is naturally pulled toward the low-price region.

1.2 Turning "When to Buy" Into "No Decision Needed"
DCA's greatest product value is converting a high-frequency decision into a one-time decision. You decide once (what, how much, how often); on every subsequent DCA day there is no inner monologue about "is now too expensive". From a behavioral-finance standpoint, this is using process to eliminate anxiety rather than willpower to fight it.
2. The Math: Why the DCA Average Sits Below the Arithmetic Mean
2.1 A Worked Example (fictional numbers)

Four periods at 1.00 / 0.50 / 1.00 / 2.00: the arithmetic mean price is 1.125, yet the DCA average cost is only 0.889. At the end of period 4 the price is 2.00, leaving the DCA position up roughly 125%.
The reason is one sentence: share weight tilts toward low-price periods (the 0.50 period bought 200 shares, the 2.00 period only 50), so the "share-weighted average purchase price" is always ≤ the "arithmetic mean of prices" — as long as there is any volatility, the inequality holds.
2.2 The Boundaries: Where This Mathematical Edge Applies
- Volatility is a premise, not a return source. DCA lowers the "purchase cost"; it does not by itself produce returns. In a one-way bull market a single lump sum early on actually earns more (you hold shares longer); DCA trades "earning somewhat less" for "staying calm".
- The long-run uptrend assumption is the premise. "Average cost below the arithmetic mean" only matters if the asset eventually recovers above your cost region. DCA does not rescue assets headed to zero: for something that can be delisted, go to zero, or grind down for a decade, the math of DCA is "losing money in the most regular possible way, for as long as possible".
- The final result is decided by take-profits. DCA only governs the buying side; the outcome over a full cycle depends on the selling side (see section 4).
DCA is not a "guaranteed-profit strategy"; it is a "buying discipline". Return = a long-term-rising asset × buying discipline × take-profit discipline. All three are required.
3. Comparing Three Batch-Accumulation Approaches
"Batch accumulation" is a family with three common members, each with its own boundaries:

💀 The Fatal Precondition of Buying More As It Falls
Pyramiding assumes "cheaper means more valuable", and no chart can guarantee that. For assets whose fundamentals can deteriorate, "buy more as it falls" has another name: "averaging down into a trap". Reserve add-ons for assets whose fundamentals can be verified and that can never go to zero.
4. DCA Discipline: The Buying Rules Are Easy — the Selling Rules Are Hard
4.1 Four Buying Rules
① Fixed date: payday or the day after; automate first — leave no opening for "skip this month".
② Fixed amount: a fixed share of monthly surplus (say 20%-30%), never adjusted for market conditions.
③ Do not add extra because it fell: extra buys belong to the pyramid strategy and need their own
written rules; never mix them into DCA.
④ Do not change the asset: switching the DCA target mid-way = restarting the game;
all prior statistics are void.4.2 Take-Profit Rules Matter More Than Buying Rules
The typical ending for a DCA plan that "only buys, never sells": three years of accumulated gains handed back in a single bear market. Write the take-profit rules before the first buy. Two mainstream designs:

Both follow the same principle: skim part of the gains off the top, and let the remainder keep compounding in the market.
5. When to Stop: DCA Is Not an Unconditional Virtue
In the following cases pause or exit; "buy more as it falls" does not apply:
- Fundamentals deteriorating: the core business is falsified, losses keep widening, the industry's logic has permanently changed — price is falling not on sentiment but because the asset is genuinely breaking.
- Zero-risk: delisting expectations, an exchange blowup, signs of a crypto team absconding — for anything that "could fall to zero", DCA = feeding money into a shredder on schedule.
- The original reason for buying is gone: you DCA'd it because "broad indexes rise over decades"; if the holding has become something unrelated to that reason, continuing to DCA is just paying inertia's bill.
The test matches the DCA section of Spot Trading Strategies: a DCA target must pass the gate of "very likely still around in ten years, and very likely higher".
6. Connecting to Portfolio Rebalancing
The highest form of DCA makes every period's fresh money serve the structure of the whole portfolio:
- Direct new money to under-weight assets first: on each DCA day check the target ratios from Portfolio Management & Rebalancing; whichever asset sits below its target weight gets this period's buy — new cash becomes a free rebalancing tool and cuts the friction costs of selling;
- DCA + rebalancing together: DCA keeps new money flowing in; rebalancing sells high and buys low on the existing stock; stacked together they remove almost every timing judgment from the system;
- The long view: the meaning of this machinery ultimately sits at the household-finance level — DCA is the conveyor belt that turns "income" into "assets", the very upstream of overall wealth planning (see the Wealth Allocation chapter).
